Experience

I am a university graduate with a Master of Arts degree in Theater, a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, a 100 hour in-class TEFL certification, a CBEST certification, and I am passionate about the art and craft of teaching. The act of imparting knowledge of word meanings and social concepts with their practical applications and special usages, finding new ways to make this knowledge desirable and accessible to different personality types with their uniquely informative histories, and witnessing the subsequent epiphanies of understanding—to me, this is a challenging, a meaningful, and a fulfilling pleasure. I understand intuitively, empirically, and theoretically the learning trajectory that distinguishes adult learners from children, advanced learners from beginners, and reluctant learners from self-starters. Incidentally, it's my experience that evincing a favorable emotional response to an educational lesson, regardless of the subject, is the shortest path to activating an integrated understanding of the matter. By mingling appropriate ad hoc theatrical techniques such as pantomime and illustration, (sometimes singing and dancing), with more traditional methods of pedagogy such as individual recitation, choral drilling, collaborative games, and writing repetition – I have consistently elicited optimum results from past students in such diverse milieus as airline safety and airline computer programs, to ocean surfing, teen theater, and teaching English as a foreign language in America as well as Spain and Thailand. Whether working within an established syllabus or engineering my own I always endeavor to create lesson plans that simultaneously challenge and affirm student capabilities. And above all, I attempt to create a learning environment that is a place of conspicuous safety where no one need ever be reticent about sharing the extent of their learning. I make this clear from the beginning: mistakes are opportunities; the less a person fears making them, the more enjoyable and effective the learning process becomes. In addition to my formal education, my professional experience as a teacher and curriculum designer, my years as an international flight attendant, and experience as a published author, illustrator, and performing song-writer have conspired to make me a supremely adaptable, discreet, diplomatic, and effective instructor for people of all ages, adults, adolescents, and children. I hope I've succeeded in conveying my competence and enthusiasm for any teaching/tutoring positions you have available.

Hobbies

I have a passion for creative writing and comic-illustrating, (to date I have written and illustrated 4 single-panel comic book collections (2 of which are original palindrome collections, and one, of puns; my fourth comic book is simply straight forward single-panel comics)). I love both composing and performing music on guitar. 7-ball juggling is one of my favorite personal achievements. I enjoy riding unicycle and juggling at the same time, also. Tennis is probably my favorite sport to watch -- although, sometimes I think soccer might be also. Surfing is, bar none my favorite athletic activity. I've had the excellent fortune to live in Hawaii (I hope one day to return to live), where I took up surfing and fell in love with it from the first wave.
